You are here > Online Catalog > Shihoko Fukumoto > Artist Biography

Shihoko Fukumoto is one of the most important indigo dye artists in Japan. Her exhibition career began in 1969, the year after she graduated from Kyoto City University of Arts. She states, “The nature of indigo synchronizes with my nature. My senses are developed through the process of indigo dyeing. Indigo allows me to interact with nature.”

I met with Shihoko on a trip to Japan in September 2011. The only way to purchase her work is to actually go to Kyoto. I spent a wonderful morning in her studio learning about her and seeing her new indigo works.

Shihoko wrote the following about her new work, “By working on indigo dye using various textile materials, I create ideal feelings and space with my imagination. In these works, I tried to express an image of light that comes from above or from the moonlight”

She has exihited her work of arts all over the world and has her public collection in Kyoto, Osaka,  Tokyo, New York, London, Portland, Sweden, and so on.
