You are here > Online Catalog > Shuji Wako > Artist Biography

Wako Shuji was born in Sendai, Japan in 1953. In 1977 he graduated from Zokei University in Tokyo.

The artist has made himself a name with lithograph prints of Japanese-related small objects that he shows in photo-realistic, meticulous excellence, often against a black or blue background.

This strive for perfection is in my view tpyical Japanese. Works by Wako Shuji are in the collections of the world's most renowned museums like the British Museum or the Rockefeller Foundation. The artist uses strong and vivid colors - except for the background. Sometimes he plays a trick of optical illusion with the viewer.
