Artist, dyer, and papermaker Tatiana Ginsberg studied at the University of Iowa Center for the Book and spent two years in Japan on a Fulbright research grant, investigating naturally dyed Japanese papers, before completing her MFA at UC Santa Barbara, where she later taught papermaking, printmaking, and book arts. Incorporating drawing, stitching, book structures, print, and sculptural forms, her work integrates traditional skills with contemporary techniques. She currently teaches as a visiting artist at Mount Holyoke College, and exhibits nationally and internationally.

"Everyday for 100 days (July 3 to October 10, 2006) I made a cup out of handmade paper. Thinking about the way Japanese tea ceremony ritualizes an aspect of everyday life, and the pauses in the day provided by cups of tea or coffee, I wanted to make cups that would react to and record the specific act of drinking. I made them in shapes of Japanese matcha bowls, from leftover scraps of paper I’d made. Every day I drank from the bowl I finished, allowing the liquid to stain the paper, reshape the form, and act as a mordant on the reactive natural dyes. Unlike ceramic vessels or the standard double cup and paper sleeve, my bowls were always threatening to spill, slosh, leak, or come apart at the seems. In both their creation and use they demanded my full attention.

Making a bowl a day for 100 days provided a way to do sustained work without being tied to the studio during a hectic summer. At moments it was difficult, but the accumulated work kept me going. A month into it I was worried that I would start repeating myself but by the end I knew I could have kept going for a long time and still discover something new. Undertaking a large project can feel overwhelming, but doing a series of small tasks feels possible enjoyable, and quieting to the nerves, like drinking a cup of tea." - Tatiana Ginsberg
